In 1626 Mrs Elizabeth Farrow discovered a stream of acidic water running from one of the cliffs to the south of the town.
This gave birth to Scarborough Spa, and Dr Wittie's book about the spa waters, published in 1660, attracted a flood of visitors to the town. Scarborough Spa became Britain's first seaside resort, though the first rolling bathing machines were not noted on the sands until 1735.

The Spa offers a range of conference suites and entertainment venues, including: the Grand Hall, seating 2000 and home to the Scarborough Spa Orchestra; the Spa Theatre, a 600-seater Victorian theatre, home to the second-longest running summer season show in the country; and the Green Lounge, Promenade Lounge and Ocean Room, which all cater for the smaller conference or event.
